I’m not claiming to be an expert Christmas tree decorator! We have three trees with very traditional decorations. I do, however, LOVE the themes that I use when decorating my trees! They are sentimental and meaningful to my family.
**Side note before reading: You don’t need a huge house to have more than one tree!! We do a lot of furniture moving!
Ok, here we go with the themes:
Family Tree
This is our main Christmas tree. We decorate this tree with the ornaments we have gotten since we were married:
- Wedding ornaments
- New home ornaments
- Baby’s first Christmas ornaments
- Ornaments for our dog
- Hunting ornaments (for my husband and son)
- Teacher ornaments
- Rehoboth Beach ornaments (our favorite family vacation spot)
- Mother-daughter ornament (for me and my mom)
- And some other pop of color bulbs
- Candy canes (because the kids would have it no other way!)
Under this tree, we also have our train, which is made up of cars from my dad, my husband’s dad, and a track that we bought a few years ago. We also have a Christmas village of porcelain houses that were around my tree growing up. I love watching my kids play with the train just like I did when I was little!
Kids' Tree
We keep this tree in our family room. (This room also serves as the “play room” where we keep all of the kids’ toys, so it is currently “their” room.) This tree is decorated with ornaments that my children have made over the years.
- Before Christmas each year, we create ornaments at home and the kids decorate them. (We also give a set to the grandparents.)
- My kids also make ornaments at school with their artwork on them.
As a bonus, the kids get to decorate this tree on their own! They’ve never noticed that I always go and distribute the ornaments a little more evenly when they go to bed. (Sorry, not sorry!)
Childhood Tree
My husband and I have so many ornaments that remind us of Christmas when we were children. We use this tree to display our ornaments from our childhood. Our parents let us choose some of our favorite ornaments from our trees growing up. We have some from our parents and grandparents. Every time I look at this tree I smile as memories flood back to me. 🙂
Other Themes
So there you have it! These are the three main themes for my Christmas trees. I love seeing how people decorate their trees! Here are some other Christmas tree themes that I have seen (either in person or online).
Small trees in children’s bedrooms: My children have a small tree in their rooms brought to them one year by Santa. Each Christmas, they get a new ornament from Santa to decorate their trees. The kids are also able to choose a few new ornaments of their choice each year. It is so fun seeing their choices over the years! Their themes change each year which creates years of memories! (Last year was dinosaurs and mermaids, and this year was Steelers and flamingos!)
Color Schemes: Sticking with one or two colors can create a lovelyChristmas tree theme. My sister has a blue and silver theme for all of her Christmas decorations. Her tree is filled with beautiful blue and silver ornaments and decorations.
Country/rustic trees: I love Christmas trees wrapped in burlap and rustic decor. These trees have a lot of browns, reds, and greens. Photo by CHUTTERSNAP on Unsplash.
However you choose to decorate will be meaningful to your family. I hope this got you in the holiday spirit! Merry Christmas to all and to all…Have fun decorating your Christmas trees!
